Medicinal Plants Used in Management of Various Mental Illnesses in Goma City, Democratic Republic of Congo

Many mentally ill people in Goma city, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), seek treatment from Traditional Health Practitioners (THPs) that utilize medicinal plants (MPs) management various ailments. The study aimed to document the MPs used locally manage mental illnesses (MIs). An in-depth ethnobotanical survey including 43 respondents selected using snow ball method and interviewed semi-structured questionnaires was conducted DRC, May September 2021. Voucher specimens were collected area identified at Makerere University Herbarium (MHU). Data analyzed parameters, frequency index, Rahman’s similarity index (RSI) non-parametric tests as well Spearman correlation coefficient. A total 30 plant species, represented amongst 29 genera 19 families reportedly treat MIs. Of these 63.33% reported for anxiety, 36.67% psychosis 30% depression. Most abundant taxa three Asteraceae, Lamiaceae Solanaceae. Among two priority species anxiety Euphorbia abyssinica Cleome gynandra L. While, depression Conyza sumatrensis Emilia coccinea. High (RSI = 77.42%) observed use common MIs between THPs both Karisimbi communes. Results prove local city against could be further studied pharmacological effectiveness safety.
